Woman, 38, dies after horror fire rips through Paisley flat

A WOMAN has died after a horror fire erupted at a block of flats.

The fire started late last night in a first floor flat on Belmont Road in Gallowhill, Paisley.

A huge emergency response was sparked as police, fire and ambulance crews raced to the scene.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sent six appliances to the scene to battle the "well-developed fire".

Two specialist height vehicles were also mobilised.

And police confirmed early on Friday that 38-year-old woman was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Locals told of their shock as they watched the devastating fire take grip of the building late on Thursday night.

A neighbour said: "I heard a kid screaming.

"I thought they were just playing until I looked out. A flat at the end was on fire. It spread so quickly.

"It seemed to take ages for the fire brigade to get here.

"They were hooking up their hoses to hydrants but it was like they couldn’t get enough pressure.

"They had to keep moving further and further down."

Photos from the scene show the fire stretching across the roofs of numerous buildings with smoke billowing into the sky.

Videos on social media also thick heavy smoke poring into the sky as firefighters battled to control the flames.

Some locals took to social media in shock saying: "It's absolutely heartbreaking."

Another said: "Thank you to the fire fighters in attendance. How devastating."

One more said: "This is absolutely devastating."

Officers are still in attendance as enquiries into the fire are ongoing.

They are urging anyone with any information to get in touch by phoning 101 quoting reference number 3922 of 13 April 2023.

Fire crews remain at the scene this morning as well as one aerial platform.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 10.45pm on Thursday, 13 April, 2023, police were called to reports of a fire at a property on Belmont Road, Paisley.

"A 38-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers remain in attendance and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

“Anyone with information should call 101 quoting reference 3922 of 13 April, 2023.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 10.37pm on Thursday, 13 April 2023 to reports of a dwelling fire Belmont Road in the Gallowhill area of Paisley.

“In total six fire appliances and two aerial rescue platforms were mobilised to the scene.

“Firefighters extinguished a well-developed fire that had taken hold within a first floor flat in a two-storey building.

“One appliance and one aerial platform remains at the scene this morning.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 22:44 on Thursday, 13 April 2023 to attend an incident on Belmont Road, Paisley.
